The Gram Amp 2 Communicator
phono preamp
punches above its weight!

Graham Slee explains...
It may look cheap and plain but this little phono preamp is legendary for its audio
performance! The Gram Amp 2 Communicator
phono preamp is THE phono preamp that first made our name synonymous with
superior vinyl reproduction and incredible sound staging!
You see, what I did was to design the best phono preamp circuit I could
imagine and include all the things that made a great sounding
phono preamp
while leaving out all the "high-end" gimmicks. Why? Because I wanted to show
the world great sound isn't the reserve of giant ornate boxes - simple!
Reviewer Geoff Husband put it like this:
A four-figure pre? Yes, Geoff Husband with his unbiased ears told the
audio world the truth! Since then all I've done is swap the packaging -
the phono preamp now in a black anodized metal case with silver anodized print instead
of the old plastic project box, and the printed circuit board inside is
larger. Even 11 years after I sat down at my kitchen table with a notepad,
calculator and a handful of parts the Gram Amp 2 phono preamp still packs
a performance few others can match at up to ten times its price!
"Switch to
the power rock of Led Zeppelin II and the Gram Amp 2 delivers both crashing
cymbals and deep thundering bass with ease"
[What Hi-Fi? Sound and Vision,
June 2002]
The vinyl DJ will love this little phono preamp too: I used to
DJ and know quality sound starts at the phono preamp - after all you want
every gig to be a good gig! The
Gram Amp 2 Communicator
phono preamp has
another great attribute - it doesn't emphasise clicks and pops - you could
say click and pop reduction is an inherent part of its design. Partner
this phono preamp with a good cartridge such as the Stanton 890 and a
substantial professional deck like the Technics SL1200 series and you'll
have the best sound around! And by the best I mean broadcast quality!
"It concedes little indeed to more expensive designs
and kept us entertained for hours. Timing is first-rate, instrumental timbre
convincing and detail resolution frankly impressive..."

Compatibility
The Gram Amp 2 Communicator
phono preamp will give an output of 400mV with a
medium sensitivity moving magnet cartridge (4.5 to 5mV). Gain is X84
(38.5dB).
Intentionally, its gain is slightly on the low side which makes it most suited for use with
medium to high output moving magnet cartridges. This also makes it an ideal
phono preamp for the DJ whose disco records can give a much higher output -
its lower gain means there's less chance of clipping (overload) so higher
volumes can be achieved with reduced speaker wear.
"Green" As Standard
The Gram Amp 2 Communicator
phono preamp
is supplied with a universal-voltage energy-efficient mains plug mounted
power supply. It can also be powered by our
PSU1 power supply which can be
ordered separately.
